Here is a classic vibe from the amazing and talented dance trio – Deee-Lite from 1992. The song is hauntingly beautiful and ahead of the game – after 20 years it still is relevant and ‘chillout’ before chill was cool. Deee-Lite released 3 studion albums in the 90’s – The fabulouslness of World Clique (1990), Infinity Within (1992) and Dewdrops in the Garden (1994). Dewdrops was completely ground-breaking and has completely stood the test of time (along with their other 2 releases). Each time I revisit the music of Deee-Lite and the fantastic vocal talents of Lady Kier, I keep asking myself: “what happened to the good old days of dance music, real dance music – not what the pop artists of today are calling it. Where artists had a message – whether it was social or politically and injected their message with a beat, a postive vibe and made it fun?” Deee-Lite was pivotal in infusing their political and social message into their extra funky and housey vibes.
Lady Kier continues to tour and belts out Deee-Lites past hits and continues to inspire us with her own original and current hits “Bullet Proof” being her latest and absolutely fantastic house vibe. I look forward to seeing Lady Kier in the future doing both gigs as performer and dj (hopefully she joins us in Toronto again for Gay Pride 2013 – she was fantastic last year!)

Billie Ray Martin began her music career as a guest vocalists for Die Zwei (Miss Fit – 1984) and S’Express (1989). Her work continued as member of Electribe 101 from 1988 – 1990, releasing house classics; Talking with Myself, You’re Walking and Inside Out. Her solo career took off with the release of her classic dance track, Your Loving Arms – this song is what I chose for song of the week this week.
Your Loving Arms was released in 1994 and was an instant hit around clubs and dance floors around the world. Many consider this song an all-time classic of dance – personally, this song and the Sound Factory Remix is definitely in my top 5 of all-time! Deadline For My Memories, Billie Ray Martins first solo album, was mainly considered a ‘dance album’ but the musical influences are definitely tinged with soul and R&B. Billie Ray Martin’s voice is distinctive, unique and smooth. I always look forward to any new music that Billie Ray Martin releases, whether it is collaborations with other artists or dj’s or her amazing solo work – it is always fresh and innovative. Born in 1975 in Sicily, Italy – Misstress Barbara has made her mark as an international electronica/house music DJ. She moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada at the age of 8 and has since called Montreal her home.
Misstress Barbara released her debut artist album as a singer in 2009 entitled – I’m No Human. This album has and continues to be one of my favourite electronic albums of all time. It includes collaborations with fellow Canadian, Sam Roberts, the Brazilian Girls and Bjorn Yttling of Peter, Bjorn and John. The album also includes a fantastic club induced, house anthem version of Leonard Cohen’s – Dance Me To The End Of Love. Along with the album’s title single, I’m No Human – there are other beautifully crafted club floor fillers such as; Is It Ok, Four On The Floor, Etna and Push Pull. This cd is a must have for any electronic/house/club music lover – it is a staple in my music collection and as I have mentioned already – in the top 5 of my favourite electronic/house albums of all-time!
In mid 2012, Misstress Barbara released her second album artist entitled – Many Shades of Grey. This effort is more radio friendly and has a more commercial sound. This album includes not only 1 song of the week but 2. That first song is called – Many Shades of Grey. I have my own interpretations of this song to reflect recent changes in my life but the lyrics are universal, inspiring and absolutely beautiful! The second song is called – Emotional, the only thing I can say about this song is that it is just that: emotional. Each time I hear it, I feel the emotion pass completely through me – when music is able to create such a feeling in me, I know it is great!
I have included the lyrics – read them before you listen and then when you are ready – take a listen to the songs and let them transport you to a wonderful and positive place where in the ‘Many Shades of Grey’ you will see the light and become ‘Emotional’.
