In anticipation of the release of her next album, New and Number 1’s, I have chosen ‘Land of the Living’ by Kristine W as my song of the week. Land of the Living was the 3rd single from the album of the same name. The other 2 singles were ‘Feel What You Want’ and ‘One More Try’. The song showcases Kristine’s vocal talents and how much power and raw emotion she has in her voice. Take a listen:
Kristine W began her Billboard Hot Dance/Club Chart career with Feel What You Want in 1994, her first # 1 single on that chart. She subsequently followed the debut on the chart with 8 other consecutive chart toppers and became the record setter for most consecutive # 1’s on this chart advancing past Janet Jackson and Madonna. Her streak ended when she released the final single from the album entitled Fly Again – the single ‘I’ll Be Your Light‘ stalled at # 2.
Kristine W is currently looking to break her own record of 9 consecutive #1’s on this chart and regaining the crown from Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez who currently have 10 consecutive #1’s on the same chart with the release of her new single – ‘Everything That I Got’ and album New and Number 1’s. Kristine W is currently the #5 artist with most # 1 singles on Billboards Dance/Club Chart with 16 (she holds this honour with her idol – Donna Summer), only Rihanna and Beyoncé (18), Janet Jackson (19) and Madonna (42) have more # 1’s. As her # 1 fan, I love all of her music but I have a special bond with the album Land of the Living and the single ‘One More Try’. My spouse and I loved to go to record shops and search for the latest vinyl, cd’s, remixes of whatever was hot at the moment…we stubbled onto the cd single/remixes of ‘One More Try’ and instantly fell in love! I will always have that memory in the joy of discovering new music with my spouse and knowing that the soundtrack of that particular moment was Kristine W’s Land of the Living album. The album is still a favourite of mine and includes and not only stands the test of time – it includes her first 3 # 1’s ‘Feel What You Want’, ‘One More Try’ and ‘Land of the Living’ – the underground club anthems ‘Sweet Mercy Me’ and ‘Don’t Wanna Think’, the soft, gentle and haunting ‘Breathe’, the fresh vibe of ‘Love Song’, the sweet interlude ‘Prairie Day’ and what I thought was sure to be a great single ‘Let Me In’. I still get chills listening to this album – it is a masterpiece!
